Las
Vegas, Nev. (6/23/2013)—More than 2,600 anti-fraud professionals have gathered at
the ARIA Resort & Casino here for the 24th Annual ACFE Global
Fraud Conference, setting record attendance for an event that is the largest of
its kind in the world.
Attendees from more than 60 countries will hear from Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney
for the Southern District of New York, international corporate intelligence
expert Chris Mathers, former Enron CFO and convicted fraudster Andrew Fastow
and other speakers and panelists during the weeklong conference.
Dubbed
“The Street Fighter” by TIME Magazine,
Bharara oversees the investigation and litigation of all criminal and civil
cases brought on behalf of the U.S. in the Southern District of New York. Under
his charge, the Civil Frauds Unit has collected close to $500 million in
settlements since its inception, including multi-million dollar settlements
with Deutsche Bank and CitiMortgage for faulty lending practices and other
fraudulent conduct.
Bharara
will be presented with the ACFE’s Cressey Award during Monday’s lunch session,
at which time he will address a banquet hall packed with anti-fraud
professionals. His appearance follows the presentation of the ACFE’s Guardian
Award to Allan Dodds Frank – Emmy and Loeb Award-winning contributor to The Daily Beast and a special
correspondent for Newsweek.
Tuesday morning, attendees will hear from Mathers, who
has posed undercover as a gangster, drug trafficker, money launderer and other
roles during his career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), U.S.
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.S. Customs Service. During
Tuesday’s lunch session, Stacey Keach, award-winning actor and narrator of CNBC’s "American Greed," will provide his personal take on fraud and staying one step
ahead of con-artists.
Fastow will give the concluding keynote address on Wednesday,
providing his reflections on the Enron scandal in his hotly anticipated appearance
– his first before a wide audience (note: the ACFE does not compensate
convicted fraudsters for their speaking engagements).
The ACFE Global Fraud
Conference marks the largest gathering of fraud fighters under one roof. The
event offers more than 80 educational sessions focused on subjects including
high-tech fraud, risk management, auditing for fraud, and detection,
investigation and prevention.
