The Pros and Cons of Conducting Virtual Investigative Interviews
Intermediate
Description
As with many aspects of our lives, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the way investigative interviews were conducted. This forced pivot has allowed practitioners who switched to a virtual format to become part of a real-life social science experiment, from which much has already been learned. This presentation covers what has been discovered by practitioners, and supported by researchers, so we can continue to conduct virtual interviews when necessary and appropriate. It explores how to apply the individual phases of the PEACE interview model (Planning and preparation; Engage and explain; Account, clarify, challenge; Close; and Evaluate) to virtual interviews, and allows us to interview witnesses and respondents (or suspects) with competence and confidence.
