How to Earn Your CFE Credential

To become a CFE, you must first join the ACFE. Only ACFE members can earn the CFE credential.

You must meet these eligibility requirements to become a CFE.
Your eligibility to take the CFE Exam is determined by a points system. Check your eligibility using our Eligibility Calculator.
You must also provide documentation — including details of professional work experience, proof of education and professional recommendations.
The exam fee is $450 (or $350 for anyone who purchased the CFE Exam Prep Course).
Once you have completed your preparation and applied, you’re ready to take the CFE Exam. The exam is:
Upon passing all four sections of the CFE Exam, your exam application, supporting documentation, exam results and proctoring sessions will be submitted to the Certification Committee of the ACFE for final review.

To test remotely online, you need access to a:
- Computer capable of installing a lightweight app
- Webcam capable of a 360-degree environmental check*
- Microphone
- Stable internet connection
- Private Location
Additional remote proctoring technical requirements include:
- Screen resolution: 1024 X 768
- Operating system: Windows 8.1 or above/MacOS 13.1 or above
- Web browser: Latest version of Google Chrome
- Microphone: Enabled
- Download speed: 0.5 mbps
Prometric will email you a score report with your exam results within an hour of completing each exam section. Results can also be found in the Prometric score report portal after you enter your confirmation number and last name.
In order to pass, you must score at least 75% correct on each section of the CFE Exam. If you are unable to pass a section of the exam, you may retake that section. CFE Exam retake fees are $100 per failed section. CFE Exam Review Course attendees will be granted a discounted retake fee of $50 for their first two failed attempts. Any additional attempts will be $100 each. You will receive instructions on how to pay exam retake fees with your exam results email. All four sections must be passed in three attempts.
Within three weeks of passing the CFE Exam, your complete CFE Exam application will be reviewed by the ACFE Certification Committee. If more information is needed, you will be notified by email. We will also notify you by email once your CFE credential is approved, and your CFE certificate will be mailed to you within 6-8 weeks.
