Detecting Fraud with Data Analytics Virtual Workshop

CPE Credit: 20
Online Virtual Workshop | December 1-13, 2021
Course Level: Intermediate
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of basic functions in one or more of the following software programs: Microsoft Excel, ACL, IDEA, Tableau

According to the ACFE's 2020 Report to the Nations, proactive data monitoring and analysis is among the most effective anti-fraud controls. Organizations that undertake proactive data analysis techniques experience frauds that are 33% less costly and detect frauds 1.5 times as quickly as organizations that do not monitor and analyze data for signs of fraud.

The Detecting Fraud with Data Analytics Virtual Workshop will teach you how to plan, design and apply numerous data analytics tests in order to detect various fraud schemes. You will also discover how to examine and interpret the results of those tests to identify the red flags of fraud.

The course will begin by providing a solid foundation on which to build your data analytics initiatives, from understanding the types of tests that can be used to properly obtaining, preparing and normalizing your data for testing. You will then learn how to link your new knowledge of analytical tests, data sources, and fraud schemes into a holistic approach for applying data analysis techniques to real data sets and scenarios. The course will conclude with discussions on how to effectively—and ethically—communicate the results of your analyses.

Homework assignments between classes allow you to practice using your data analytics skills to uncover the red flags of fraud. You will work through cases covering a variety of exercises, including case studies on purchasing fraud, payroll manipulation, and cash receipts fraud.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Apply the full data analysis process, including planning, data preparation, analysis, and effectively communicating the results
  • Implement numerous traditional and non-traditional data analysis techniques
  • Identify anomalies and recognize common red flags of fraud that appear in the data
  • Design and run targeted data analytics tests to detect various types of fraud schemes
  • Communicate the results of your data analyses effectively and ethically
