Chapter Name: Arizona Chapter
Position on the Chapter Board: President
What do you do for a living?
I am an internal auditor for Best Western International. Previously, I was a fraud investigator for the State of Arizona.
Why did you decide to get into this field?
Fraud has always been fascinating to me – detecting signs of fraud and abuse, and then figuring out how the perpetrator was able to continue their scheme. I recently transitioned into an internal audit role so that I can use my fraud experience in a more positive, collaborative way. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be on the other side of the table, and help strengthen controls and proactively identify weaknesses.
How long have you been involved with the chapter?
I first began attending chapter meetings in 2008, when I was pursuing the CFE credential.
How long have you been a board member?
I first joined the chapter board in August 2010.
Why did you become active with the chapter and the board?
My manager first encouraged me to attend the meetings because they provided great fraud training at a nominal cost. I decided to run for the board because I saw it as a perfect opportunity to combine volunteerism with a profession I am passionate about. I knew that I had benefited enormously from the training and networking opportunities provided by the chapter, and I wanted to help ensure that future CFEs would enjoy those same benefits.
What has been a highlight during your time on the board?
I love our annual holiday lunch event. Every year is special, but my favorite would have to be 2011, when we welcomed Terry Goddard as our guest speaker. Mr. Goddard was Arizona Attorney General from 2003 – 2011, and was also previously the Mayor of Phoenix. We ended the meeting with lunch and dessert at Phoenix’s only revolving rooftop restaurant.
What goal or achievement do you hope to accomplish during your time on the board?
My top priority is to continue to provide a wide variety of high-quality trainings at nominal cost to our members. Beyond that, I hope to have all board processes and policies updated, documented, organized, and centralized by the time I rotate out, so that future transitions are smooth and seamless.
When you're not working or managing chapter activities what do you like to do in your spare time?
Two teenagers and two dogs in the house keep me pretty busy! I like to read, hike, and visit the zoo, and I absolutely love to travel (Vegas is only 5 hours away!)
