Passion for Training Drives UK Fraud Risk Manager

    Laura Davies

    Fraud Risk Management Consultant
    London, England

Laura Davies is a fraud risk management consultant for KPMG, LLP in London, England. She has been a member of the ACFE since 2012. Davies previously worked for England’s National Health Service (NHS), where she helped establish a not-for-profit organization dedicated to fighting fraud in Europe.

How did you learn about the ACFE?

I have been aware of the ACFE throughout my career in fraud risk management as it is considered the industry standard in many business sectors. Being responsible for training, I identified the CFE as an excellent qualification to complement those of our forensic accountants – and so it is now part of our recognized training. Since moving to the private sector I decided to join as a member of the ACFE. I am currently undertaking the CFE Exam Prep Course (international edition) to become a CFE, which will complement my UK specific qualifications which include being an Accredited Counter Fraud Trainer.

How did you get started in your line of work?

My career in fraud risk management started in 2002 when I joined the NHS Counter Fraud Service. During my time there I managed the unit responsible for research, which included the development of courses such as the first BSc and MSc in Counter Fraud and Counter Corruption studies. A highlight of my NHS career was the three years I spent establishing the European Healthcare Fraud and Corruption Network - a not-for-profit organization based in Brussels. I was vice-president for a period before moving to the private sector and remain an Honorary Member.

What are your current responsibilities for KPMG?

Currently I focus mainly on fraud vulnerability and risk assessments, control implementation and investigations. Recently I have developed a passion for training as a result of which I have designed, developed and delivered fraud risk management, anti-bribery and corruption, investigations skills and general awareness training programs for several FTSE 100 companies.

Please tell us about some of your interests outside of fighting fraud.

Aside from work I have a 20 month old daughter who keeps me on my toes, and I like to travel as much as possible. I am a real people-person and love nothing more than experiencing new cultures (and their cuisine), most recently spending my maternity leave in Spain and Kenya.
