Sidney F. Jarrow, CFE, CPA

Sidney F. Jarrow, CFE, CPA, 92, died February 3.

Jarrow, an ACFE member since 1989, received the ACFE’s “Distinguished Achievement Award.”

“Sid was one of our most senior and loyal members, even attending annual conferences after he fully retired,” said Dr. Joseph T. Wells, CFE, CPA, founder and Chairman of the ACFE. “He had a brilliant mind and a wonderfully wry sense of humor. We will greatly miss him.”

Jarrow, a retired partner of Clifton Gunderson LLC, began his accounting career post-World War II in the family business, which later became Doty Jarrow & Co. Delayed by the war, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Illinois in 1948.

During the war, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a radar instructor, which launched his future interest in teaching.

Jarrow was a leader and educator in the Illinois CPA Society and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He conceived and developed the “Businessman’s Information Guide” in conjunction with the Illinois CPA Society. The AICPA later adapted and published the book in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was also a contributing author to the AICPA’s “Management of an Accounting Practice Handbook.”

Jarrow, a member of the AICPA Council, received that group’s “Outstanding Instruction Leader” award. He spoke at conferences sponsored by the American Medical Association, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the National Automobile Dealers Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, among others. He wrote for professional journals and served on numerous editorial boards.

Jarrow is survived by his wife, Barbara; his daughter, Barbara Ann Beitz, and her husband, Dan; his son, Scott F. Jarrow and his wife, Leslie; his son, James R. Jarrow, and his wife, Tamara; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Anne Marie Mooney, CFE

Anne Marie Mooney, CFE, 67, passed away unexpectedly on February 1.

Mooney, an active member of the ACFE and local chapters in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, was one of the first female U.S. postal inspectors, working on undercover operations as a federal agent. She then helped to establish the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for the Massachusetts Office of the Attorney General and served as director of investigations at multiple corporations. She also founded her own Certified Fraud Examiner firm and was adjunct faculty at Southern New Hampshire University.

Mooney directed complex investigations involving whistleblowers, government and corporate corruption, organized crime rings and insurance fraud.

“I had the pleasure of knowing Anne Marie for quite a few years,” said ACFE Regent Emeritus Bruce A. Dean, J.D., CFE, CPP. “I first met her when she was a U.S. postal inspector and we were investigating a possible case of mail theft from a Boston business organization. She later went on to assume a major anti-fraud role with Blue Cross Blue Shield in Boston before founding her own CFE practice in New Hampshire.

“She was very active in local ACFE activities,” Dean said. “At one time she served simultaneously as chair of both the Boston and New Hampshire Chapters of the ACFE. She was an energetic and very knowledgeable individual who exemplified the professional Certified Fraud Examiner.”

Mooney’s survivors include her son, Matthew, his wife, Christine, and their son, Caden; daughter, Catherine and her boyfriend, Matthew DeBeul; her brother, Jim Roach and his wife, Ginny and their sons, Paul, Patrick and fiancée, Megan Dillon; and Benjamin and his wife, Kelsey; and cousin, Marty Roach and his wife, Mary.
