Report to the Nation on Occupational Fraud and Abuse

Occupational fraud and abuse is a widespread problem that affects every entity, regardless of size, location or industry. The ACFE has made it a goal to better educate the public and anti-fraud professionals about this threat. Reporting on fraud statistics is a key component of this goal.

The Report to the Nation is based on a survey that began in late 2003 and ran through the early months of 2004. Certified Fraud Examiners throughout the US were asked to provide detailed information on one fraud case he or she had personally investigated that met the following criteria:

  • The case involved occupational fraud;
  • The fraud occurred within the last two years;
  • The investigation of the fraud was complete; and
  • The CFE was reasonably sure that the perpetrator had been identified.

The end result is a comprehensive report that sheds light on occupational fraud and abuse statistics while offering stark lessons and valuable insights about its prevention and detection.

ACFE Members receive a complimentary copy of the Report to the Nation as a supplement to their July/August issue of Fraud Magazine.
